Etymology
Zam is an Avestan [language] term for the Zoroastrian concept of "earth", in both the sense of land and soil, and in the sense of the world.
The earth is prototyped as a primordial element in Zoroastrian tradition, and represented by a minor divinity Zam who is the hypostasis of the "earth". The word ‘Zam’ is changed to 'Zamin' in Modern Persian, and is cognate to the Baltic 'Zemes', Slavic 'Zem', meaning the planet earth as well as soil.
Epistemology
All activities considered as ‘art’, have begun with the beginning of the human life (A.H Aryanpour). Since the beginning of the human life, artistic activities have been integral part of individual and social life, therefore, clearly inseparable from the human life. The history of human life has been a continuous effort to achieve order, balance, and control over the natural environment, social life, the physical and mental world . What is known as “fine art” is in fact a process of reaching out this balance and control, over --and in parallel to--life and the [inner and outer] world. Therefore, undoubtedly there would be no escape from “fine art” in human life.
In conclusion, art is as old as human life, and art will be continued as long as human life continues. Art is one of the main factors of the social life and a necessity for livelihood. By believing in art and its power to transform individual lives and in turn the world, Zam Contemporary opens its doors for art creation and artist expression, by providing a space for everyone and most importantly to those who are often erased and/or excluded, due to the socio-political climate, their ethnicity, gender, or social philosophy.
Zam Contemporary is an interdisciplinary art initiative founded in 2022 by Mehregan Meysami, providing a discursive platform, art residency, exhibition space, workshops in Stockholm region. Zam Contemporary is a space for diversity, to come together and think together, a meeting point between the constructs of West and non-West and artists working with all disciplines.
